Tusheti sits above the Abano Pass, one of the highest roads in the Caucasus. The drive from Tbilisi is the way in. After that, the horses do the work.

We ride between stone villages: Shenako, Diklo, Dartlo, and the high hamlets above the Pirikita Alazani. Towers, sheep, and big shepherd dogs.

Nights are in family guesthouses. Supper is long. The horses sleep in the village pasture.

The route.

01 · Day 1 · Over the pass

Meet in Tbilisi and drive through Kakheti, then up the Abano Pass to Omalo. Keselo towers, a late lunch, and a walk through the village so the altitude can settle.

02 · Day 2 · Shenako and Diklo

Saddle the Tushetian horses and ride out through Shenako's church toward Diklo. The fortress sits on the ridge. We sleep in Diklo.

03 · Day 3 · Down to Dartlo

Over the ridge and through the hamlet of Chigo, then along the river to Dartlo. The towers here are the picture of Tusheti. Supper with the family.

04 · Days 4-7 · The high villages

A day toward the passes above Parsma, then back through the Gometsari gorge toward Omalo. On the last morning we drive the pass in reverse and eat in Tbilisi.
