The steppe doesn't do small. Grass runs to the edge of the sky, rivers cut slow loops through it, and the only fences are the ones you imagine.

You'll ride Mongolian horses: small, tough and smarter than they look. Days are long and honest. You walk, trot, and canter when the ground opens up and the horses want to go.

Nights are simple. A tarp, a fire, a pot of something hot, and more stars than you knew existed.

Highlights

  • ▸ Open-grass riding with no fences for days.
  • ▸ Nights with a herding family: milk tea, horses, and stories you won't fully understand.
  • ▸ River camps, cold water, and a fire you built.
  • ▸ Eagles, marmots, and sometimes wild horses on the far ridges (sightings not guaranteed).
  • ▸ A horse you'll be sad to hand back.

The route.

01 · Days 1-2 · Meet the herd

Fly into Ulaanbaatar, then drive out until the road becomes a track and the track becomes grass. Meet the horses and the herding family who raised them. Saddle fitting, a short ride out, then first camp by the river. You'll learn the tarp and the fire on night one. Everyone carries a little.

25 km · 5 h · river valley · wild camp

02 · Days 3-5 · Nothing but grass

The country opens and stays open. Long, steady hours across rolling steppe, a canter when the ground is good, lunch wherever the horses stop to graze. Camp moves every day. You'll start reading the sky for weather the way the herders do.

25-35 km/day · 6 h · open steppe · wild camps

03 · Days 6-7 · The family ger

Two nights with a herding family. Help with the horses, try the milk tea, lose at knucklebones. A rest day for the horses means a slow day for everyone: wash, mend, sleep in the sun.

Rest day · herder camp · ger

04 · Days 8-10 · The way back is different

A new valley, a high pass, a last river camp. On the final morning you ride back to where it started. It looks smaller now. Drive to Ulaanbaatar and a hot shower you'll appreciate more than any hotel.

30 km · 6 h · valley and pass · then Ulaanbaatar
